ABOUT THE GREENHOUSE & BOTANICAL GARDENS

The City of Virginia Greenhouse is owned by the City of Virginia and operated with support from the non-profit Friends of the Greenhouse.   The greenhouse is open during our volunteer-staffed open hours on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 4pm. 

The Greenhouse has been a local attraction since 1935. Citizens and tourists enjoy viewing a variety of tropical plants during all seasons, and especially the comfort and warmth of this unique green space during the long winter months.

The Virginia Greenhouse is, and has always been, a regional gem. The benefits extend far beyond the geographic boundaries of the city of Virginia. Olcott Park has long been a destination trip for families. Throughout its colorful past the greenhouse has provided the community a valued experience of vegetable and flower gardens, a zoo with a monkey house, a traditional greenhouse, a rock garden feature, special garden events, and winter sports, among many other activities, features and events. Investment by the city, as well as community and corporate sponsorship over the years, documents the special place the Olcott Park, including its greenhouse, has achieved in the minds of not only Virginia's residents, but to families in adjoining communities. With the conintued support of volunteers, the Greenhouse will continue to be the gem and will allow this landmark to be handed down to the next generation.

The Friends of the Greenhouse cultivates a connection between people and plants through opportunities for learning and enjoyment that support a vibrant, sustainable community.  

The Friends assist with the long term care of the plants in the Greenhouse, as well as provide valuable input on capital needs and requests.
