The Human Resources & Safety department is responsible for coordinating all personnel and safety issues for employees of the City of Virginia.  The HR/Safety Director has an office at City Hall.  Her normal office hours are Monday - Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  These hours are subject to change.

Applications will be kept on file for one year.  Please do not call or come in to City Hall or the Department of Public Utilities for job applications, unless specified to do so.

Labor/Management

Most City employees are represented by a labor organization:  American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME Local 454), Law Enforcement Labor Services (LELS Local 195), International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF Local 390), or the City of Virginia Supervisors Association (represented by Minnesota Association of Professional Employees). 

 

Benefits

Employees of the City of Virginia have a variety of benefit options available to them.  Pension benefits are available through the Minnesota Public Employees Retirement Association.  Medical, Dental, and Life Insurance are provided by contract.  Optional benefits include:  457 deferred compensation plan, medical flexible spending account, additional life insurance, and other types of optional insurance.  Employees with questions about their benefits should contact Sherry Erickson.

 

Safety

The City and Department of Public Utilities have Safety Committees made up of Union and Management members that meets monthly.  The Committees develops policies and encourages safe work practices, on and off the job.  The HR/Safety Director maintains records, organizes safety training, and enforces safety policies.
