City Council Filing is Open
In accordance with the Minnesota Election Laws, the City of Virginia will observe the following dates for the election of three City Council members to four-year terms (January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2024):
Filings for City elected offices
Open – Tuesday, May 19, 2020
Close – Tuesday, June 2, 2020
Primary Election (if necessary) August 11, 2020
General Election November 3, 2020
Filings for said offices will open at 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. daily beginning on Tuesday, May 19, 2020, and close at 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, in the office of the City Clerk, Room 6, City Hall, 327 South 1st Street, Virginia, Minnesota.
All candidates shall file a certificate stating his/her qualifications for the office with the City Clerk and shall pay a filing fee of ten dollars ($10.00).
Please note that City Hall is closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Candidates are able to file by mail, using the secure drop box at City Hall, or by appointment for curbside drop off.
To file by mail, candidates should mail their completed and notarized Affidavit of Candidacy form and filing fee of $10.00 to: City Clerk, Room 6, City Hall, 327 South 1st Street, Virginia, Minnesota. Once received, the City Clerk will contact you to confirm receipt.
Candidates also may file their completed and notarized Affidavit of Candidacy form and filing fee by leaving it in the secure drop box located at City Hall, near the 4th Avenue elevator entrance. As with mailed in filing, the Clerk's Office will contact the candidate to confirm receipt.
A third option is to file in person outside the City Hall via curbside filing. Candidates should contact the Clerks' Office to schedule an appointment between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (or until 5 p.m. on June 2.) Staff will meet the candidate outside of City Hall. The terms of City Councillors Julianne Paulsen, Carl Baranzelli and Steven B, Johnson will expire on December 31, 2020.
