Neighborhood Watch Program

Operation I.D.

 Missing Person Alert Program

has come to Virginia

and we need YOUR help!

Burglary, theft and vandalism are the crimes most likely to affect people.

Criminals look for easy targets because most are amateurs. The easier you make it for criminals, the more likely you are of being the victim of crime.

What can you do?

You can discourage the criminal by removing opportunity.  Encourage others in your neighborhood to participate in the Neighborhood Watch program.

1. Neighborhood Action/Block Watch is fundamental to burglary or criminal prevention.

  • Widespread participation will make your individual efforts even more effective in deterring burglary, theft, vandalism, and robbery.

  • Neighborhood watch programs can work equally well in an apartment building or complex as an area of single family homes.

  • The plan will include efforts to get everyone to mark their property and inform everyone of good home security practices.

  • It involves watching out for suspicious or unusual activities in general, but especially, keeping an eye on each others homes during those times when no one is at home.

  • A concerned and watchful neighborhood is important in preventing crime because most burglars are amateurs and they will be discouraged if they think they may be observed.

  • Information you or your neighbors give police about suspicious activities often will result in quicker and more successful efforts to solve crimes that may occur

2. A. Operation Identification

  • Property marking is one of the oldest and best methods of crime prevention.

  • Operation I.D. stickers on your property discourages forced entry.
  • Operation I.D. will become an important part of our neighborhood watch program.

  B. Securing your home is fundamental to burglary protection.

  • Amazingly, 30 to 50 percent of homes and apartment burglaries happen because someone doesn’t lock a door or a window.
  • A lock is not a lock unless you lock it.
  • Our Neighborhood Watch Program will help educate people on how to secure their property.

3. Missing Person Alert Program

  • This program will represent a significant step forward in winning the fight against time to safely recover missing persons.

Once we are organized, signs and window stickers will identify the City of Virginia as a Neighborhood Watch Community.

We intend to be successful, and we need your help!

Please contact City Hall at (218) 748-7500 or at mayorcouncil@virginiamn.us to let us know if you will be a partner in this effort!
