MECC DESIGN UPDATE 11/7/19

The City of Virginia, is pleased to reveal the Schematic Design for the New Miners Event and Convention Center.

For more than a decade the City had been seeking funding to help with infrastructure improvements to include electrical and mechanical upgrades to the Miners Memorial Building. Over the years this structure has deteriorated and is approaching its’ constructive end of life. In 2005 on a scale of 1 to 5 the Miners complex received a low rating of 1.5 by comparison to similar structures throughout Minnesota.

Over the past several years City Administration, City Council representatives, and City Staff have met with citizens, business owners, and users of the Miners Memorial Complex to identify needs and establish priorities for new construction. These countless meetings are now showing the fruit of all of that labor thanks in part to the citizens of Virginia overwhelming approving a 1% sales tax increase in 2018 and the State Legislature approving 12 million dollars of State funds for renovation and/or reconstruction of the Miners Memorial Building in 2017.

On Tuesday November 5th at 6:00PM the City of Virginia along with the design team unveiled the Schematic Design for the New Miners Event and Convention Center at the Miners Memorial Building located at 819 9th Avenue South in Virginia. This state of the art facility has been designed with continuous input from key stakeholders and will be a key upgraded facility and amenity that will serve the residents, businesses, and the iron range region for decades to come.

Some of the potential facility programs and usage include, but are not limited to, a walking track, children, adult, and senior programs, multi-use rooms for community groups and partners, two ice areas, family parties and social meetings, concerts, hospitality events, community education classes, concessions, wedding receptions, fine arts and craft fairs, and a state of the art conference and event center. In addition, in times of crisis, the Miner’s facility can provide the needed infrastructure contingencies to handle communications and shelter for emergencies, neighborhood evacuations, and natural disasters.
