CITY OF VIRGINIA IS SEEKING INTERESTED CITIZENS
FOR APPOINTMENT TO CITY COMMISSIONS

The City of Virginia is seeking citizens in our community who are eager, willing, and motivated to become engaged by serving as a commissioner on City Commissions. Participating on a Commission is a great way for citizens to voice their concerns and opinions.

The City of Virginia is currently accepting applications from qualified citizens to serve on the following Commissions:

PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION

The VPUC commission oversees the management of the VPUC for the City of Virginia. The Commission meets the 4th Monday of the month at 3:30 p.m.

Meetings are held at 3:30 p.m.on the fourth Monday of the month at the VPUC

LIBRARY COMMISSION

The Virginia Public Library Commission advises on matters of library policy, administration, operation, and service

Meetings are held at 5:15 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month at the Library

PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION

The Planning & Zoning Commission advises the City Council on development proposals, property standards, long-range planning and property maintenance code issues.

PARK/RECREATION COMMISSION

The Park/Recreation Commission advises the City Council on Parks & Recreation matters of long-range and citywide importance including Parks, the Miners Memorial Building, Greenhouse, Tennis Building and all Recreational Programs

Meetings are held at 4:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at various locations

ADVISORY HOSPITAL COMMISSION

The Hospital Commission oversees the lease agreement between Essentia and the City of Virginia. The committee meets quarterly(January, April, July & October)

HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

The Virginia Human Rights Commission gathers information and provides referral services to individuals who feel they have experienced discrimination within the City of Virginia

One (1) opening to serve balance of 2 year term ending   2/1/2023

Two (2) openings to serve 3 year terms ending 2/1/2024

Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at City Hall

CHARTER COMMISSION
The charter is like the constitution for City government, spelling out its duties and responsibilities.  The City of Virginia  is the  governed by home rule charter; many  other Cities are governed by state laws.

 

The Charter Commission's duty is to periodically review the charter and propose necessary amendments and reviews and recommends proposals from the public. The commission has the authority to submit proposed amendments to an election.

COMMISSION QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for All Commissions (except VEDA)  must be a qualified voter of the City of Virginia and must be a resident of the City for no less than one year.

Applicants for the Virginia Economic Development Authority (VEDA) must 1) Reside in the City of Virginia; 2) Own property in the City of Virginia; 3) One member not qualifying from above, but who is employed within the general Virginia business area.
